Oakhill Youth Offenders Institute
Straight Talking partnered with Oakhill youth offenders institute for boys in 2015/16. Working with the Oakhill team a course on teenage parenthood was developed that could be delivered within the Secure Training Centre. The pilot project was rated as a huge success and Straight Talking will continue the work in 2016/17, further developing a bespoke course on healthy relationships and child sexual exploitation.
NHS Team Up
In 2016 Straight Talking took part in NHS Team Up. The Team Up programme involved brokering partnerships between multidisciplinary teams of health professionals in training and voluntary organisations to deliver sustainable health and wellbeing projects for disadvantaged communities across London. Straight Talking conducted research with St Georges Hospital to identify any barriers to engagement with NHS services that are felt by teenage mother and young fathers. A series of interviews and group discussions allowed young parents to share their personal experiences with NHS professionals and explore avenues for improvement.
The National Gallery Art Project
Straight Talking’s young parents were involved in a project with the National Gallery where they were asked to explore themes of the Titian painting ‘Dianna and Callisto’.
The story behind the painting is a narrative that has particular resonance for our young parents and the gallery wanted them to share their feelings with a group of secondary students as part of a schools project.
Our young parents stunned the facilitators with their confidence and insight. The gallery organisers revealed that our group had found symbols in the painting that their experts had so far not seen.
Motivational and Relationships Weekend Residential
Once a year Straight Talking has a weekend retreat which focuses on providing interpersonal skills, relationships education and important information on domestic violence, which is strongly linked to teenage parenthood.
In 2014 Lifetrain UK hosted the event at Blackland Farm, West Sussex. The activities included abseiling, canoeing, rock climbing, trust and team building exercises, motivational talks and guidance on relationship issues.
"It was one of the most overwhelming experiences I've had. The team building was the most life changing part of the residential as it had me look at myself and my life in a whole different way. The physical activities were great as well. They had my lungs at full capacity and my smile at full stretch." (Quote from a young father after the 2014 residential)
Semester at Sea Project
Straight Talking was invited to give presentations and take part in discussions with students from the US on board a floating university which landed in Portsmouth. Two of our young parents took part with amazing results. In particular one teenage parent who had just begun university found the event very inspirational. She began to understand how many amazing places her education could take her.
I thought art was rubbish at school but that was really interesting. I had such a great time.
